DAYTON, Ohio (AP) — Authorities say a man shot after striking an Ohio sheriff’s deputy while attempting to flee in a vehicle has died.

The Montgomery County coroner’s office said 43-year-old Gary Brown of Dayton died hours after Saturday’s encounter in Dayton.

The county sheriff’s department said two deputies spotted a suspicious vehicle parked in a tornado-damaged business just after 1 p.m. Saturday.

The vehicle appeared unoccupied but approaching deputies saw a man “hiding in the back seat.” He was ordered to show his hands and step out of the vehicle but instead he jumped into the driver’s seat and sped out of the parking lot, striking one of the deputies, who fired.

Authorities said the vehicle crashed into the fence of a home on the corner. The two deputies got there and provided first aid to the injured man until Harrison Township fire department medics arrived and took over care, but authorities say the man died at the scene.

The two deputies were taken to Miami Valley Hospital for treatment and evaluation. Both are on administrative leave pending administrative review of the case.
