Shots Fired at Zanesville City Hall

ZANESVILLE, Ohio – The Zanesville Police Department received a report in regards to a shooting that took place Monday morning at Zanesville City Hall.

Neighboring businesses briefly underwent a lockdown and Zanesville Police Chief Scott Comstock arrived at the scene shortly after the incident to describe what had taken place.

“About a quarter til ten,  we got some reports from employees that they though they had heard gunfire and shortly after we got calls into the police department for gunshots in the Utility Billing window and officers responded to the area. Motive is unknown at this time. We do have a subject in custody. Looks like a few shots were fired into the building and the subject left the area and was located a couple of blocks away,” Comstock said.

The subject is currently in the Zanesville City Jail and will be identified once formal charges are filed.

Detective Sergeant Phil Michel was also on the scene as well to investigate and shared some of the initial findings.

“Right now we’re going to process the scene,” Michel said. “There’s shell casings that we discovered, there’s bullets inside the City Hall there that we’re going to try to recover. This right now is just gathering up all the evidence to have a successful prosecution in this case. No one was physically injured at this time. I’m sure there’s a lot of people shaken up inside right now.”

Comstock noted that the damaged Utility Billing drive-through window may force customers to seek alternative payment methods.
