Smokey Visits Blue Rock State Park

A national icon reminds children of the dangers of forest fires.

Smokey Bear is a figure of fire safety throughout the United States and Saturday he visited Blue Rock State Park to teach campers about being safe when it comes to fires. Smokey’s popularity helps him relay his message, especially when it comes to children.

"Smokey is a very recognized figure throughout the United States and the world. People are recognizing him with fire safety and it’s just a magical moment for kids to see Smokey," said Douglas Lindsley, Ohio State Park Officer.

Labor Day weekend is one the busiest weekends for camping in all parks across the nation, making it more important to remind those spending time in the woods the dangers of campfires.

"It’s a honor we have him here today, he’s busy this time of year with all the fires across the nation right now, But it’s a great reminder for kids and adults too that we don’t play with matches and we make sure our fires are out and we just make sure everybody is safe around fire," said Lindsley.

Smokey took pictures with kids and park officers handed out free gifts.
