SOUTH ZANESVILLE, OH – This Thanksgiving, the South Zanesville Fire Department cooked up some safety tips so your holiday doesn’t go up in flames.

While deep-fried turkey is a great holiday tradition for many, it comes with possible dangers that require careful attention. South Zanesville Fire Chief, Russell Taylor, highlighted several safety tips for those planning to fry their turkeys.

“Try to stay away from any structures and any wood products because it could blow over when you put the turkey in too fast and it will cause a fire,” South Zanesville Fire Chief, Russell Taylor said.

It’s important to make sure the turkey is thoroughly thawed out. A partially frozen turkey can cause oil to splatter dangerously and cause a fire. Be sure to keep a safe distance from the fryer to avoid burns and injuries.

“Number one big risk would be burning your house down and getting injured. Getting burned with hot grease will really do a lot of damage to the skin. You’ll want to try to stay as far away as you can and be as careful as you can,” Taylor said.

Chief Taylor said that cooking-related fires are more common during the holiday season and it’s always important to practice these safety measures.
