South Zanesville Police Department Pushes for Levy on May Ballot

SOUTH ZANESVILLE, Ohio- The South Zanesville Police Department is hoping to have a levy passed on the upcoming May ballot.
The levy is 4 mills/ 5year, with hopes to improve the community with a new full time officer.
The officer will be put in place to cover a night shift, so that the village does not have to rely so heavily on the county sheriffs.
The South Zanesville Chief of Police, Officer Mark Ross, says that the levy will provide better coverage.
“We have to rely on the Sheriffs Office, and they do a great job but they have a large area of the county to patrol in. And sometimes it could take an officer, depending on where they’re at, with the county if we’re not on duty, it may take them at least maybe 20 minutes to even get to a call,” the chief told us.
Right now, the South Zanesville Police Department only has two full time officers including the chief and one other officier.
The levy would cost the owner of a $100,000 home $11.60 a month.
“This is something we’re asking for the village if they, if we see a need we’re asking for the citizens. For their help if they’re willing to help and they’re able to help financially. Then thats what we’re asking for and if they feel that they’re able to do this, we’re asking for a yes vote,” he also mentioned.
The Chief would also love to add numbers to the force to increase visibility in the community.
Early voting has already started for the May primary election.
