Space Camp Celebrates 50th Anniversary of Moon Landing

NEW CONCORD, Ohio – Fifty years ago marks the first time man stepped foot on the moon, and kids are learning about its significance at this year’s space camp.

The annual space camp at the John and Annie Glenn Museum takes kids ages 8 through 12 on an education journey about space, and gives them a chance to learn about those who made a big contribution to space exploration.

“Every year we have a space camp and we always celebrate in July because July is the birth month of John Glenn. And this is the John and Annie Glenn Museum. And of course he led an exciting life, had an exciting career, and made contributions, and so we want to take note of that,” said Director of Education for the Museum Association of East Muskingum, Betsy Taylor.

The kids do lots of fun activities with team building exercises, constructing “cooling suits,” and designing mission patches. The theme for this year was the “First Moon Landing,” teaching the youth the details about the Apollo 11 mission itself and celebrate the impact it has made.

“This is a good opportunity for us to talk about specific things about that mission. Even though John Glenn had nothing to do with it, you know, people who do good accomplishments many times stand on the shoulders of others. And that’s exactly what happened with Glenn, and the Gemini, and the Apollo missions,” said Taylor.
