Spring Burning Restrictions in Effect Across Ohio

Fire Department

ZANESVILLE, OH – As we head into spring, fire officials are reminding residents to be careful when it comes to outdoor burning.

Ohio’s outdoor burning regulations are now in effect through May 31st. State law prohibits most outdoor burning in unincorporated areas between 6 a.m. and 6 p.m. during the months of March, April, and May.

“From 6 p.m. to 6 a.m. you can burn. But you have to supervise that burn and make sure you have a water source. You can only burn rubbish, tree limbs, and stuff like that. No trash and no tires. It could be harmful.” South Zanesville Fire Chief, Russell Taylor said.

Burning is limited in the spring because dry grass, weeds, and leaves left over from winter can easily catch fire. Winds and low humidity can quickly cause a fire to grow and spread beyond control.

“You might think it’s wet but believe me it’s not. It’s dryer than you think. Fire spreads so fast and causes a lot of danger to property and homes. Anything in that’s its way before we get there is going to burn.” Chief Taylor said.

If a fire does get out of control residents should call 911 to contact the local fire department right away.
