Spring May Bring Pest Problems

With the weather warming you may start to notice a pest problem.

Hartley’s Termite and Pest Control owner, Bryan Hartley, says he expects to see an increase in the amount of bugs and termites this year.

"Spring is the most (prominent) time because that is when it get warmer the bugs are hibernating over winter and they come out when it gets a lot warmer," says Hartley.

Hartley says one of the biggest problems in our area is termites. From now until the beginning of June it is "swarming" season where termites fly out to start new colonies. One colony usually includes 250,000 termites and can be a huge problem for a home owner. To fight termites, Hartley uses a non-invasive bait system. He sets bait traps filled with wood and puts them every ten feet around the house to lure termites in.

"We go back and check them and when we find the termites in them we replace it with bait and then they eat that and it kills the colony," explains Hartley.

While there are home bug traps that can be bought at the grocery store, Hartley says termite and bug problems can get out of hand quickly. So even if you see just one cockroach, ant or termite in your home, there are probably several more hiding within your home.
