Stepping Into History: Exploring Nelson T. Gant’s Legacy

ZANESVILLE, OH – History came to life in Zanesville on February 4th! As part of an adult program held by the Muskingum County Library System, visitors got a special look inside the Nelson T. Gant house to explore his lasting legacy.

The program featured a guided tour of the historic site, giving guests a chance to learn about Gant’s journey as a successful entrepreneur. The event also highlighted the importance of preserving local history.

“It is so important to share his legacy with the community because it’s something that we have in the community that a lot of people are not aware of. Nelson Gant came here as a free slave and then he became a prosperous businessman. It’s important to show what one person can do no matter how many obstacles are put in front of him. It shows what one person can do and how they can overcome and be successful,” President of the Nelson T. Gant Foundation Todd E. Ware said.

Attendees walked through the historic home, discovering stories of resilience, success, and community impact.

“95% of the house is original. There’s only a few small areas that’s not original,” Ware said. “I hope they take away the knowledge of what this man accomplished in this community. Including the Gant Stadium which used to be Gant Park, was one of the first parks that was integrated in the state of Ohio with blacks and whites coming together.”
