Stone Academy’s New Underground Railroad Project Coming Soon

New Exhibit

ZANESVILLE, Ohio – Be prepared for another exhibit coming to Stone Academy Historic Site and Museum.

They are currently in the process of finishing an added Underground Railroad Exhibit. There are two major components to it. A hallway component that is partially completed, that will talk about the abolitionists in Putnam and Zanesville. The other component is the exhibit featuring a series of panels containing information of the Underground Railroad and abolitionist activities in the area. A video kiosk will also be added for visual information.

“We try to cover an addition to the six major Network to Freedom sites, other related Underground Railroad and abolitionist activity locally. And we try to tell a lot more about what happened here in this building,” said Museum Director, Jim Geyer.

The project is grant funded from the National Park Service. They are covering most of the costs of the new exhibit. Geyer said there is a big significance to learning about history where you live.

“Well we believe that understanding and appreciating your past is really important when determining your identity as a community. So what we try to do, not only with Underground Railroad, but with other exhibits that we have here, is we try to bring back the historic heritage of the community,” he said.

The project will be ready to open in May.
