Straight Up Outta’ the Underground

ZANESVILLE, Ohio – Black History Month offers a glimpse of how cultural perspectives can vary around events and actions that have taken place in the past.

One of those actions was the Underground Railroad that led slaves to freedom. The Muskingum County Library System Youth Services Manager Haley Shaw announced a storytelling event that highlights one individual’s contributions toward helping others.

“So we have the Children’s Theater of Cincinnati or TCT On Tour, that’s their touring company’s name, coming to the library again to put on a production of Harriet Tubman: Straight Up outta’ the Underground. It is a show about Harriet Tubman and her role in the Underground Railroad and helping free slaves. We wanted to bring this show here for black history month as a way to share the story with our community,” Shaw said.

The fun and engaging event will take place as an interactive show that will take place in the library’s theater, which holds over 180 people.

Shaw encourages anyone interested in learning more about Black History to join the library’s Black History Month reading challenge that is being offered online.

“If you want to engage and learn a little bit more about Black History with the library, we do have Black History Month Challenge on Beanstack, which is the challenge platform that we use with Summer Reading, things like that, you might be familiar. You can visit our website to check out that challenge, get enrolled in it, learn some cool stuff and fun information and facts,” Shaw said.

The Straight Up Outta’ the Underground show will take place between 10:30 and 11:30 a.m. Saturday, February 17th and registration can be completed online.
