Survivors Celebrate Triumph
Sulsburger Stadium filled with survivors and supporters July 11.
It was all part of the 4th annual ‘Rock the Walk’ event to support those who live with traumatic brain injuries. It kicked off with opening ceremonies that featured the national anthem sang by a young Marlana VanHoose who is living with Cerebral Palsy and blindness. Founder of BrainSong Micah Jones said the singer is an inspiration to her.
“She is quite an inspiration,” said Jones. “She did a wonderful job she shouts out ‘hey’ and ‘love you’ and she’s just a joy to be around.”
Another survivor, Sharon Budd of Massillon, Ohio stopped by, just two weeks after her 7th surgery. Budd suffered a brain injury after a large rock was tossed from an overpass and struck her directly in the face through her car windshield. She and her husband spoke about her experiences since that day, and Jones said she was so excited to meet someone like Budd.
“Again, another inspiration to have for not only the survivors but anyone,” said Jones. “Just what she’s overcome, what she continues to do and to see the support that her husband gives her it’s just inspirational. ”
The survivors started the 5K with the first lap, as their supporters and friends cheered them around the track. Then they all joined together. After the 5K, there was time for children to be fitted for helmets and more. Jones said the day was another success.
