Thanksgiving Travel Forecast

We’ll soon see packed roadways and airports, as one of the busiest travel times of the year is just less than a week away.

With cheaper air fare and gas guzzling below $2 a gallon, even more Americans are expected to travel this holiday season. AAA projects that nearly 47 million Americans will travel 50 miles or more from home, which is a slight increase from last year. Public Relations Manager for AAA-Ohio, Kimberly Scwind, said Thanksgiving travel volume is expected to be at the highest level since 2007.

“We have 89 percent of travel that is going to take place by car, so it’s a huge perk for those people who are going to be driving, gas prices are nearly $1 below where they were last year,” Schwind said.

The Thanksgiving travel period runs from Wednesday the 25th to Sunday the 29th, with the peak travel time being Wednesday evening. Nearly 4 million Americans are expected to fly this Thanksgiving, so if you’re planning on heading to the airport, Schwind said to give yourself plenty of time.

“Because of all the terrorism and the threats around the world, you can expect longer lines at security, so they’re going to be more vigilant, it might take you a little bit longer, we’re recommending that people give themselves at least two to three hours before their flight,” Schwind said.

As heavier traffic is expected on the roadways this coming week, Schwind said now is the perfect time to check your oil and tire pressure.
