Thawing from Winter’s Weather

A round of freezing rain Tuesday morning makes for a slick commute for area drivers.

If you found yourself trying to thaw out your vehicle experts say a little preparation goes a long way in out thinking the weather.

"You can pretreat the windshield so that when you get in, in the morning the ice comes off easier," said Lead Commercial Parts Pro at Advanced Auto Parts Michael Davis. "Of course have a good ice scrapper in the car and a good snow brush, which will be more important in the next day or so."

Davis said pretreating your windshield is as easy as being able to use a spray bottle and he recommends checking your windshield wiper blades and wiper fluid.

"Coming into winter time there are several products like windshield washer fluids that are not treated for winter time, so they’ll have a summer additive that doesn’t have a freeze agent so they come in and they are already froze up." said Davis.

While the best thing to do in winter is slow down when driving, Davis said it also doesn’t hurt to carry a small container of ice melt in the trunk. This can be thrown under tires to provide extra traction.
