The 1st Gable Connors Memorial Scholarship Tournament

ZANESVILLE, Ohio- Suicide is the second leading cause of death for people ages 10 to 24 nationwide and one local school is making it their duty to bring awareness.
The ‘Pin Suicide’ Gable Connors Memorial Scholarship tournament will take place July 16th. Head Wrestling Coach, Shawn Connors said they are having the tournament to raise awareness for teen suicide and how it can be preventable.
"It’s available to all youth wrestlers up to people that are already graduated. We have a masters division and I know we have some college kids coming that want to wrestle in it," said Connors. "We’re hoping to have a good turn out, we’re giving out three $500 scholarships. One to a Maysville wrestlers, one to a Muskingum Valley wrestler lake senior and one to someone throughout the state."
Coach Connors had a loved one fall victim to youth suicide and said even if they only touch one persons life by having this event he knows he would have fulfilled his purpose.
"My son committed suicide four years ago and it’s always been in the back of my mind how we can get through to kids and to raise awareness to get them to talk. Then we thought we would like to give back to the kids in the area in Muskingum Valley and throughout the state and we came up with the suicide tournament and they scholarship tournament all in one," said Conners.
Coach Connors said all proceeds from the event will go towards the scholarships.
