The 46th Annual Moonshine Festival

NEW STRAITSVILLE, Ohio – The 46th Annual Moonshine Festival the kicked off this weekend.

New Straitsville, is often refereed to the moonshine capital of the world and today the village is celebrating with an annual festival held over Memorial Day weekend with a variety of fun and entertainment for the entire family.

"When the Moonshine Festival started in 1971 it was after the 100th birthday of New Straitsville. This is a coal miners town and also known for moonshine. We’re the moonshine capital of the world and we just recently have a new distillery making the moonshine in town and during the festival time we also have a working still, so when people want to come see the still and moonshine being made," said Rita Spicer, Committee Member for the Moonshine Festival.

Spicer said this is a family fun event that is handicap accessible because it is located right on the streets in downtown New Straitsville.

"It started off with family members and the Chairman now started off working the festivals when he was 14 years old he’s 60 now and he’s the Chairperson. We just love to see the people come out and it’s like a festival of family here," said Spicer.

A Grand Finale Parade with the Hillbilly Shriner Cars will take place Monday at 3 p.m along with a variety of other fun activities.
