Thursday Music Club Prepares for 43rd Jr. Recital

ZANESVILLE, OH – The Thursday Music Club is gearing up for their 43rd annual Jr. Recital.

The recital will take place on Sunday, March 2nd at 3PM in Elson Hall at Ohio University Zanesville and will feature musicians in grades K-8 from local area schools.

Melinda Patterson, the President Elect of the Thursday Music Club, said each year they ask local music teachers to send their best young musicians to perform for the community.

“It will showcase promising young pianists, vocalists, and a couple of violinists,” Patterson said. “This annual event is sponsored by the Thursday Music Club and is open to the public without charge, there will be refreshments following the recital.”

Patterson says this recital also highlights the long standing friendship and partnership in the music community between the Thursday Music Club and OUZ.

Jim McLaughlin, a local music teacher, said there will also be a private competition for high school students.

“The Zanesville Thursday Music Club for the past 43 years has offered a high school music scholarship competition and it’s like a college audition,” McLaughlin said. “It’ll be closed so it’s not a public event but that’ll be held the same weekend on Saturday at OUZ, and this year we have $2,500 that will be shared with the top 5 performers.”

McLaughlin said the purpose of the scholarship competition is to encourage local youth to pursue a career in music.
