Truck driver sentenced in kidnapping of woman who escaped

AKRON, Ohio (AP) — A South Carolina truck driver was sentenced to 30 years in prison Thursday for kidnapping a woman who managed to escape at a truck stop in Ohio.
The woman told investigators she got into Anthony Ingram’s truck in Michigan in August 2018 when he offered her a ride. She said she was raped along the Ohio Turnpike and later escaped at a Mahoning County truck stop.
Ingram, 33, of Travelers Rest, South Carolina, was convicted of kidnapping in federal court in Akron in October. He said he plans to appeal. A message seeking comment was left with his attorney.
Ingram initially was charged with rape and kidnapping in state court. The case was dismissed after a 90-day speedy trial deadline was missed.
Officials said the dismissal resulted from a communication breakdown between the Ohio State Highway Patrol and Summit County Prosecutor’s Office.
Federal prosecutors subsequently charged Ingram with kidnapping.
