UPDATE: Accident On U.S. 40 West Leaves Two Injured

A two car injury accident occurred on U.S. Route 40 West and Kopchak Road Wednesday evening.

The call for the accident came in just after 5 p.m. Sgt. Kevin Kelley of the Ohio State Highway Patrol explained what happened.

“A silver 2011 Ford Fiesta was going westbound on U.S. 40 and stopped at the intersection there by Kopchak to turn left onto Kopchak Road.  There was a large truck in the left lane eastbound on U.S. 40 that was waiting to turn onto National Road.  A second vehicle, a 2007 Hyundai Tuscon, was eastbound in the right lane of U.S. 40 passing the stopped truck. The silver Ford Fiesta attempted to turn in front of it, and they struck.”

Sgt. Kelley said 52-year-old Cindy Smith of Zanesville was driving the Fiesta and suffered non-life-threatening injuries to her legs and was transported to Good Samaritan Hospital. The driver of the Hyundai Tucson, 49-year-old Tim Lear of Philo, was also transported to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

Sgt. Kelley said both drivers were wearing their seat belts.  He said Smith will be cited with failure to yield at a stop sign.

Falls Township Fire and EMS and the Muskingum County Sheriff’s Office also responded to the scene.
