UPDATE: Sheriff Lutz Investigates Sunday Shooting
Muskingum County Sheriff Matt Lutz said an investigation is underway into a shooting incident.
It took place at Briar Rabbit Shooting Sports during the United States Pistol Shooting Association, shooting event. This past Sunday Sheriff Lutz said it was around 2 p.m when his office received a call that 60 year old James Kendall Merrill of Dublin was shot in the chest.
“During the shooting event, there was different lanes that the shooters shoot in and during this time we think one of the individuals down in a different lane walked up to put some covers on the target to be able to shoot again. We think when these lanes have concrete in them and we think that one of the bullets from another range hit and ricocheted and hit the individual in the chest area,” said Sheriff Lutz.
Lutz said after a preliminary investigation its believed that the shooting was accidental, but the incident is still under investigation.
“We took some evidence that day to make sure what we have. We took a lot of witness statements from everyone that was down there. There has been no charges, I don’t anticipate any charges as of right now,” said Sheriff Lutz.
Sheriff Lutz said at this time the victim remains in stable condition.
