UPDATE: ZPD Releases Name of Man Involved in Standoff with Police

The Zanesville Police Department is releasing the name of a man who was involved in a three-hour long standoff with police Thursday afternoon.

Chief Kenneth Miller said 33-year-old, Nicholas A. Hale of Columbus is being charged with six counts of kidnapping, two counts of felonious assault, one count of aggravated burglary and one count of aggravated robbery, all of these charges carry a firearm specification. He’s also facing one count of having a weapon while under disability. Miller did confirm that Hale is connected to a drive-by shooting that occurred Wednesday night near Shinnick and Orchard Streets. In regards to that incident, Hale is being charged with one count of felonious assault with a firearm, and one count of improperly discharging a firearm at or into a habitation.

“Obviously I’m very satisfied with the outcome, nobody was injured during the whole operation, the two hostages were injured prior to us getting there, and we got them medical treatment,” Miller said.

Miller said around 11:00 a.m. Thursday, Zanesville police were called to a home at the 1200 block of Devin Street for reports of a possible hostage situation involving Hale and two victims. The two victims were safely released from the home and taken to Genesis Hospital with minor injuries. Eventually, the Special Response Team deployed tear gas into the home, before Hale finally surrendered to police.

Hale’s arraignment is scheduled for Monday morning. He is currently being held in the Zanesville City Jail on a $1.1 million bond.
