“Walk a Mile” Brings Awareness to Domestic Violence

Walk A Mile

Local business owners and community members strapped on their high heels and work boots for a good cause.

The 10th Annual “Walk a Mile in My Shoes” event took place Monday evening in front of the Muskingum County Courthouse.

Dorothy Thomas, the chairperson for the event said it was held to bring awareness to domestic violence in the community.

“It’s basically meant to bring awareness to the people in the community about how hard it is to walk in somebody else’s shoes and not judge them for staying with people,” said Thomas.

Aivy Lewis was the guest speaker at the event and she shared her story of how she overcame domestic violence. Lewis said that it was very important for her to speak at the event.

“This means a lot to me because I am a survivor so I have experienced the abuse first hand and so I am in a place in my life that I’m able to provide support and help and after all these years it took me so long to get to this place where I feel like I am fit to be able to be on the other side instead of thinking I am the victim,” explained Lewis.

The event also featured awards as well as a live auction. The night wrapped up with groups of walkers taking a lap around the courthouse.
