What Issue 1 Means For Veterans
On Tuesday Ohio voters passed Issue 1 which gives bonuses to veterans of the Persian Gulf, Afghanistan and Iraq wars.
The Muskingum County Department of Veteran’s Services says payments are about a year away and an application process is still being developed.
"There is a lot of work to do in this, they have to set up a place to do it, hire people to do it and then they have to set up rules and guidelines," says Don Mckee the Muskingum County Director of Veteran’s Services.
When the application process is set, veterans will be alerted through the media. The amount of money a veteran could receive will depend upon the amount of time served and whether it was served domestically or in a combat area.
"$1,000 would be the most that you could receive and that would be the veterans who actually served in the combat area, that is $100 a month not to exceed $1000 and then if you served overseas excluding the Persian Gulf, Afghanistan or Iraq that will be the same as here in the states if you served, a $50 a month not to exceed $500," days Mckee.
If a veteran was killed while serving in combat areas or died as a result of combat injuries, then $5,000 is available to the family.
