Wreaths Across America
Cemeteries from all over the country took time out to honor our service men and women.
This event happens each year, at noon on the second Saturday in December. It started 40 years ago when a wreath company in Maine decided to send their extra wreaths to Arlington National Cemetery where they there placed wreaths on military headstones. Since then, several locations across united states has taken on this idea and dedicated this day as ‘Wreaths Across America.’
“It’s a way in which America can honor their veterans and also those that are still serving by placing wreaths on individual graves of veterans that has been buried in cemeteries across the nation,” Tim Patton.
Although this event took place at Greenwood Cemetery, the community was encouraged to place wreaths at any cemetery that has a veteran grave sight as well as veteran memorials downtown.
“I think it’s a wonderful way especially this time of the year when people are thinking of their loved ones and maybe sons and daughters that are in the military that are not able to be home for Christmas; for them to recognize them and to remember them and to do something that feels real and to be able to honor them in this kind of way,” said Patton.
There were over 1100 wreaths placed on veterans grave stones and memorials through the nation.
