Yappy Hour: Fundraising for a Cause That’s Ruff to Beat
ZANESVILLE, OH – Who needs happy hour when you can go to Yappy Hour?
The Animal Shelter Society is gearing up for its biggest fundraising event, with all proceeds helping animals like Boone.
April Gibson, Animal Shelter Society Executive Director, said, “What always comes in March for the Animal Shelter Society is Yappy Hour. This Thursday is our 9th annual—it’s hard to believe that we’ve had that many. We have Yappy Hour so we can take care of animals like Boone. Being a 100% nonprofit, where we don’t receive anything from local government entities or state or federal funding, this is how we keep things going for the over 100 animals in our care.”
Boone, an 8-and-a-half-year-old dog, arrived at the shelter in November after his owner made the difficult decision to part with him for her career. Despite the change, Boone remains a loving and well-mannered companion. His previous owner raised him with care, and he walks beautifully on a leash without pulling. He also loves car rides.
Gibson explained Boone’s situation, saying, “Sometimes animals come our way because people have had to make really tough decisions. Mr. Boone’s owner—she had to make a really hard decision to surrender this dog that she’s had since he was a puppy. He’s 8 and a half years old.”
Many people pass up senior dogs in favor of puppies, but shelter staff encourage potential adopters to give older dogs a chance.
“Think about going for the older animals,” Gibson urged. “They deteriorate when they have to sit there for so long like that. It’s really sad to watch people walk by Boone’s kennel to go to a puppy. Boone is probably one of the best you can get to teach your child—12, 13, 14 years of age—skills, life skills, working skills to take care of the animal.”
Yappy Hour will take place Thursday, March 6, at the Zanesville Country Club. Doors open at 6 p.m., and the event wraps up at 8:30. In addition to raising money for the shelter, Yappy Hour also provides a great networking opportunity.
Only about 12 tickets remain. Anyone interested in attending or meeting Boone can contact the Animal Shelter Society for more information.
