Zanesville American Legion Awards 12 Students with Scholarships

MUSKINGUM COUNTY, Ohio- The Zanesville American Legion Post 29 handed out scholarships this evening to recent high school graduates who plan to head to college in the fall.
The American Legion handed out eight scholarships last year, but this year the organization was able to award 12 students. The scholarships were available to students who are dependents of Post no. 29 members or a grandchild of a member.
“We try to help out the community as much as we can, especially our members,” finance officer of the American Legion Michael Weaver said. “We try to help mostly veterans as a whole, but anybody in the community for the most part that needs help; if they need to do a fundraiser we can assist with that.”
American Legion members wanted to award these hard working students with funds to help with college. The organization also hopes they will join the American Legion one day.
“They will get $500 this year and then at the beginning of the year they will get another $500, as long as they turn their grades in and they are up to date… We try to honor the kids and show how much it means to us that we’re giving out these scholarships,” Weaver said.
