Zanesville City Schools Awarded Grant from Dollar General
The Dollar General Literacy Foundation has awarded $126,999 to Zanesville City Schools.
This grant award is part of more than $4 million in grants awarded Tuesday to approximately 870 schools, nonprofits and organizations throughout the 43 states Dollar General serves.
“We are extremely fortunate to have a partner in literacy like Dollar General,” said Steven Foreman, Director of Title I and Special Programs. “This award will enable us to revamp our after-school programming by partnering with The Barbara Bush Foundation to provide student mentors, purchase cutting-edge electronic support for students, and provide many needed supplies to teachers and students in the program. This grant fills a critical need in our district as we strive to provide differentiated lessons to students after school that enhance their school day.â€
Zanesville City Schools operates an extended day program that is funded through four 21st Century Community Learning Center federal grants. The Dollar General Literacy Grant will supplement current services and help to promote good attendance in the program.
In addition to the award, Dollar General has committed to the supply and distribution of approximately 11,000 books that will be given to students and their families to create home libraries to promote literacy. The books will be distributed during numerous elementary school events during the 2015-2016 school year.
Zanesville Superintendent Doug Baker said, “This partnership with Dollar General and the resulting monetary support is a real game-changer for our students. We are excited to roll out these new initiatives.â€
