Zanesville Fire Department discusses holiday cooking safety

ZANESVILLE, Ohio- For many families, the kitchen is the heart of the home, especially around the holidays.

This afternoon, local firefighters shared safety tips and preventative measures to keep you safe this holiday season.

“Cooking fires are the most common around the holidays. whether it be the day before, the day of or the day after, whenever your family meets. So just be aware of your kids not pulling stuff off the stove and throwing stuff on the stove,” said Alan Graham of Zanesville Fire Department.

As of 2017, 46% of house fires were started by cooking. These fires can be can be a result of simple things such as leaving things unattended.

“If you do have a fire in your kitchen whether it be a grease fire, don’t throw water on your grease fire, shut off your power source. if you have a fire in your oven, keep the oven closed,” said Graham.
