Zanesville Fire Dept. Warns Drivers To Turn Around, Don’t Drown

ZANESVILLE, Ohio – Many area roads have been impacted by high water due to the rain the past couple of days.
We spoke with the Zanesville Fire Department’s Chief, Jeff Bell, on their concern with drivers and high waters out on the roads. It’s important to avoid areas that are already flooded, and never attempt to drive through them. Bell says everyone should respect the power of water and not take the risk, turn around don’t drown.
“If you have roadways, you come upon signs, you see high water. Don’t underestimate the power of water. As little as six inches of water could sweep an adult off their feet. Twelve inches could float a small vehicle. Two feet of water could carry away most larger vehicles also,” he said.
Chief Bell also said high waters could have an unknown depth and contain threats such as debris, sinkholes, or disturbed pavements.
“So it may look like it’s just a few inches deep, and you get into it you don’t know what that few inches of water has done to the roadway. Where it may have eroded it away, and carry you away,” he mentioned.
If ever in a position where your vehicle gets stuck in high water, emergency personnel should be contacted immediately.
