ZHS Students Showcase Talents in New Art Gallery
ZANESVILLE, OH – Students at Zanesville High School have a new space and audience to share their talents with.
If you’ve stopped by the Colony Square Mall recently, you may have noticed one of the stores filled with works of art.
Heather McFerren, an Art Teacher at Zanesville, said it all began with just decorating a few of the window displays around the mall and now they have a whole store space dedicated to student artwork.
“We have artworks all around the room.” McFerren explained. “I have the opportunity, because I teach sculpture classes, I get to have the 3D works on stands also, so it gives me a place to make sure that I can display everything all around and showcase all my students, every month.”
McFerren said once students complete a piece she will then ask if they want it displayed.
Some of her students, Kamryn Carder, a Senior and Rachael Allwood, a Junior shared their experiences in creating their pieces and getting the opportunity to display them for a whole new audience.
“I’ve been doing a portfolio for AP Art about my family and just the secrets, the dynamics that we have going on and right now I have a piece in here about the dynamics of my grandparents and how it evolved,” Carder said. “It’s been a lot about my family, where we come from, and how that affects every generation that comes after, just a lot about how everything affects everything else.”
“I just like the class’s exploration of art, so I just really do anything. I have a landscape and a still-life [in here]. I just like how we can do what we want in this class,” Allwood said. “I just really like the diversity that we can show here and make in the class.”
If you would like to check out the Zanesville High School Art Gallery, it’s located right next to Auntie Anne’s in the food court.
