ZANESVILLE, Ohio- Â Locals took time this Memorial Day morning to honor those who passed away while serving their country.
Zanesville Memorial Park hosted a memorial service for veterans Monday. Speaker James Moorhead said it’s so important to continue to commemorate Memorial Day. Moorhead said Memorial Day is near and dear to his heart because he lost his older brother in World War II.
“I just try to say something to jog someones memory of the loved one that passed away,” Moorehead said. “And even thought they’re gone from us they are still near to us.”
The free event began at 9:45 this morning, and featured the American Legion Post 29 colors, a prayer and speech from Post Chaplain Moorehead, songs by the West Muskingum High School Band, a 21 gun salute, and  tribute of silence for Family Service Adviser Jack Carroll and Park Administrator Denice Ford.
“A lot of people don’t realize which the legion of veterans organizations are. The preamble of the Constitution starts off for God and country. I try to mix in God because our country would be nothing without the guidance of God,” moorehead said.
The event concluded with a balloon release with William Conroy playing the bag pipes.
