Zanesville-Muskingum County Health Department Gives Tips For Healthier Holiday Eating
ZANESVILLE, Ohio-Â It can be difficult to fight the urge to have that extra piece of your grandmother’s pie at your family feast this year. But you may want to think twice before having that second slice.
The Zanesville-Muskingum County Health Department is giving folks some helpful hints for healthier holiday eating.
“Weight gain is a big issue over the holidays,” said WIC Project Director, Jody Shriver. “It’s not uncommon for someone to gain 1-2 pounds. While it doesn’t seem like a whole lot. Each year of 1-2 pounds over the course of 10 years you’re gaining between 10-20 pounds. That has detrimental effects to your health and well being as well.”
Shriver wants folks to work to change their mindset when faced with temptation at the dinner table.
“We have lots of holidays. We have birthday parties and Thanksgiving. We have Christmas. We have get-togethers all the time. So if we can maintain that attitude that this is a once in a life time opportunity. Then we’re not going to be in moderation, we’re going to always tend to overindulge and it’s going to be more often than once a year,” said Shriver.
Shriver said moderation is key to help folks avoid overeating.
