Zanesville and Newark win in opening tourney game

ZANESVILLE, Ohio – Both the Zanesville Lady Blue Devils and Newark Lady Wildcats won at their respective home gyms in their opening OHSAA tournament game.

The ECOL Scarlet Division champions were the 13th seed in the tournament and took down the 30th seed Cruisers of Groveport Madison 38-27. Karisa Weekley was the top scorer for Zanesville scoring 19 points.

Meanwhile in Licking County the number one team in the state had no problems in their opening tournament game. The Newark Lady Wildcats scored the first 26 points of the game and beat 46th seeded Franklin Heights 80-17.

Both teams advance and play again this Tuesday. Zanesville will be at Mount Vernon and Newark will host Hamilton Township. Both games tip at 7 p.m. The two teams could meet one another in the tournament. If they did it would come in the district finals on March 4 at Ohio Dominican University.
