Zanesville Officials Urge Caution for Motorcycle Safety Month
ZANESVILLE, OH – May is National Motorcycle Safety Awareness Month, and with sunny skies rolling in, more bikers are hitting the roads.
Highway patrol officers are urging riders, especially young or new ones, to take extra precautions this season.
“Safety tips, especially with young motorcycle drivers, go get the proper training, make sure you have the proper endorsement before operating a motorcycle. Just be on high alert. Allow plenty of time for turns. Make sure you always wear your helmet. And drive within your limits,” Sgt. Kyle Shirer with the Zanesville OSHP said.
Over the past four years, Ohio has seen over 20,000 motorcycle-related crashes, with 1,000 of those being fatal. The highway patrol is reminding drivers to stay alert, avoid distractions, and always check mirrors and blind spots for motorcycles.
“Just be alert when you’re driving. Don’t be driving distracted, allow a safe amount of distance in between yourself and a motorcyclist. And drive sober. That’s a big one too.”
