Zanesville OSHP Urges Motorcycle Safety

ZANESVILLE, OH – As the weather warms up, more motorcycles are hitting the roads across Ohio. The Ohio State Highway Patrol is reminding both riders and drivers to stay alert and share the road safely.

Officials say motorcycles can be harder to see on the road and riders have far less protection during a crash. Troopers are encouraging drivers to slow down, avoid distractions, and always double check blind spots before changing lanes or turning.

“Always look twice. If they’re off in the distance, just know that they may be going a little bit faster than what they appear to be going. Just take your time around motorcycles. We also encourage motorcyclists to be cautious and to pay attention to their surroundings as well, because somebody might not be able to see them.” Zanesville OSHP Post Commander Lt. Brian Hawkins said.

The Patrol also reminds riders to wear proper safety gear and always ride sober. In Ohio, helmets are required for riders who are under the age of 18. Troopers will continue watching for speeding, distracted driving, and impaired driving throughout the season.

“Today in Muskingum County, we have three motorcycle units from the Highway Patrol working in our county to bring awareness to motorcycle safety on both ends, from the motorcycle themselves and for the public to pay attention to see those. It’s a lot easier to miss a motorcycle than it is a car.” Lt. Hawkins said.

The Ohio State Highway Patrol says motorcycle safety is a shared responsibility between riders and drivers. The public is encouraged to safely call #677 to report reckless or impaired drivers and drug activity.
