Zanesville’s road crews cleared the roads and are prepared for the season

The snow storm has come and gone and the roads have been cleared away and the city of Zanesville stands ready for the next one.

Before the snow entered the area, the city’s road crews were already hard at work making sure that the roads were treated as Mayor Don Mason explains.

“So what we do in anticipation of a snow storm is, when possible, if we have to, we can put some salt down in advance and that really helps keep the streets from getting ice on them to begin with. But then we move our crews to 12 hours on, 12 hours off and we run two shifts in order to continue to treat these streets,” Mason said.

Mason says the crews start with the major primary streets in town before moving into the secondary streets with the alleys to follow. The crews are finishing up their 12 hour shifts today but Mason says they are well prepared for future winter storms.

“Well the good news is that since we’ve had very light snowfall over the last several years, we’ve actually built up our supply of salt and, again, ice treatment materials. We are on a minimum purchase plan with a[n] entity and every year we’ve had to buy the minimum amount of salt and frankly haven’t used it so that’s the good news,” Mason said.

The mayor also wanted to remind viewers that motorists should still drive cautiously after winter storms even after the road crews have done their job. The Ohio Bureau of Motor Vehicles driving manual recommends slow speeds, increased space when behind another motorist, and increased stopping time.
