Zanesville’s status as a Tree City USA community and the new tree planted in a local park

ZANESVILLE, Ohio – The city of Zanesville has been considered a Tree City USA community by the Arbor Day Foundation for nearly 30 years, and in the spirit of that fact, a tree planting took place on Friday.

A special tree planting took place at Buckingham Terrace Park. A pink dogwood tree was planted in the park on Woodlawn Avenue that Mayor Don Mason says is of historic significance.

“So, Buckingham Terrace Park is a very old historic park in an old historic end of town that we’re actually putting about $1.4 million into street scapes about a block from here, but Buckingham is one of the original businessmen and founders within the city of Zanesville who was also instrumental in the Y-Bridge,” Mason said. “So I think it’s important that we honor and recognize his name and all the contributions he did, you know, 150 years ago, and we’re doing that in a simple way by planting a tree at a park named after him.”

At the event, Mason highlighted the importance of planting trees in the city to keep our air clean and aesthetically pleasing. The mayor also wanted to issue a reminder to those in the city with commercial properties.

“So I’d like to remind those business owners out there, that if you have a business property and you’re looking at expanding or removing trees, you’ve got to get a permit from city because what we make sure that you do, I’ll call it a like-kind exchange. If you’re taking out a certain amount of trees, a certain amount of sites, we want to see them replaced somewhere in the city or contribute contributions to the tree bank,” Mason said.
