ZFD Looking For Help In Right For Lights

The Zanesville Fire Department is looking for your help during their Right for Lights.

We spoke to Lieutenant Doug Hobson of the Zanesville Fire Department who told us they want the public to pay more attention to emergency vehicles with flashing lights and sirens. Hobson said when individuals don’t pay attention, it makes things difficult for emergency personnel.

“What happens is we’re going on these emergency runs and we may be going like down Maple Avenue where you have two lanes and then a turning lane and the person in front of us just decides to panic and stop completely. The fire trucks are extremely heavy. They’re loaded with 750 gallons of water and unfortunately they don’t stop on a dime.”

Hobson said that if you come across an emergency vehicle with flashing lights and sirens, you should move over to the right to let them pass through. Hobson said that you should also be mindful of area of fire signal lights at intersections around town.

“When those guys go get in the truck they hit that signal that turns that signal red. It’s very important if you come upon a traffic light and it’s red, not to go through it. A lot of people have a tendency to come up to it, it says fire signal, they look, they don’t see anything and they take off. Well, but if that fire trucks coming, we’re going to a house on fire, a house on fire with entrapment, personnel, people inside, we want to get there as fast as we can.”

You should always stop if you see a red fire signal. Hobson said that you should always look at the situation as if your loved one may be the one calling for EMS or that your home is the one that is on fire.
