ZANESVILLE, Ohio – One local group is trying to help those dealing with a loved one who may be struggling with a mental illness.

According to Paul Quinn, the president of the National Alliance on Mental Illness, one in four people are affected by mental illnesses in America. For two decades now NAMI has been trying to help those struggling.

“NAMI is a grass roots effort to help families understand how to cope with mental illness. When you get a diagnoses of mental illness in your family it can feel like a death sentence and that’s usually accompanied by a lot of fear because of the stigma and the unknown,” said Quinn.

NAMI will be offering a free 12-week class on Saturdays to teach people how to deal with those who have a mental condition. The classes will be held at Six County Incorporated on Bell Street in Zanesville. Quinn explains what people can learn from the classes.

“For family members who have loved one with mental illness, we will teach them about the illness. We will role play with them about how to interact with a family member that may be in crisis and teach them the tools they need to support their loved ones recovery,” said Quinn.

To register for the classes you can call (740) 452-2416.
