Latest from Zanesville City Council

ZANESVILLE, Ohio - Zanesville City Council met Monday and held their second meeting for the month of October. During the meeting a local business asked the city for financing.

We Luv Pets is relocating from their current location to the new location at the intersection of State Route 60 and Northpointe Drive. The owners have asked the city make the development a TIF, or a tax increment financing district. Public Service Director Jay Bennett says this could create new revenue for the city.

“That would capture new revenues from investment within the TIF district; then those monies would come back into the city,” said Bennett.

The city has already been in contact with West Muskingum School District and the Mideast Career and Technology Centers about what they could do with the additional money they could receive.

“We look at that and sit down with the school districts and talk about the investment and how much that would mean. They would certainly still get everything they currently getting in assessed value. So it’d be that new revenue that we would be dialoguing with the districts about,” said Bennett.

The proposal is similar to the one the city made with the new Panera Bread in the area is hoped that the funds can be used to spur growth in the city. City Council’s next meeting will be Nov. 14.
