ZANESVILLE, Ohio – The Nelson T. Gant House is the home of the former slave turned Zanesville’s first Black millionaire, and students from West Muskingum had a chance to learn his story.

3rd graders from the school district had the chance to tour the preserved home and museum led by Todd Ware, the president of the Gant Foundation.

“The kids just love it. They see the devices, they see the stuff from the 1800’s, they see the original house, they see the furniture, they see the gadgets that were used during that time,” Ware said. They learn about what Zanesville was like during that time and how this former slave was able to become the man that he was.”

West Muskingum students also had the chance to eat packed lunches while watching a video that told the history and accomplishments of a man who faced challenges head-on.

“With two pennies in his pocket, became an owner of a coal mine, owner of a salt lick, owner of a large farm, sold vegetables, was given land to purchase here on West Main,” Ware said. “It was the address 1845 West Main, that was the time he was freed from slavery and he sold vegetables and designer strawberries and was just very into making things happen.”
