Authorities search for escaped inmate at Ohio county jail

CLEVELAND (AP) — Authorities are searching for an inmate who escaped from a troubled county jail in Cleveland.

Cleveland.com reports The U.S. Marshals Service, sheriff’s deputies and investigators are searching for 30-year-old Ferdinand Torres-Varga, who escaped from the Cuyahoga County Corrections center sometime Tuesday or early Wednesday.

County officials initially said the jail was locked down Wednesday morning for a headcount. A county spokeswoman later confirmed Torres-Varga’s escape.

He was arrested Sunday on a felony domestic violence charge and misdemeanor charges of endangering children, aggravated menacing and marijuana possession.

It’s unclear how Torres-Varga managed to escape the downtown lockup.

Three inmates at the jail have been mistakenly released in recent months, including a man accused of murder.

A U.S. Marshals investigative report last November called conditions at the jail inhumane.
