Scouts Sell Popcorn to Help Raise Funds

ZANESVILLE, Ohio — The Boy Scouts of America’s annual popcorn sale has begun.
The Muskingum Valley Council has about 2,000 scouts selling to raise funds for camp.
Christy McCandlish talked to WHIZ News about what it means to her.
“This is my son, James. He is a bear, which is a Cub Scout. My older son, Josh, is an Eagle Scout. He is from the Muskingum Valley Council as well. The popcorn sales really benefit our councils as well by allowing our packs to buy equipment. The money does stay very local, not just within our council, but within our individual units as well. It lets them buy camping equipment, it allows the kids to earn money to go to camp. This will be Jame’s third year of going to summer camp,” McCandlish said.
“Hello. I am James from Pack 128 in Zanesville, Ohio. I am selling popcorn for residents camp. Will you help me, please?” is her son, James’ pitch.
Ed Mulholland is the council’s Executive Director.
“We’re in the middle of our annual popcorn sale. Units, Cub Scouts, Boy Scouts, Venturers, they raise money selling popcorn to pay their way to camp to buy all their little achievements that they get on their uniform and to purchase equipment, those kinds of things. We’re just so grateful to the community, the way they support these scouts. 70% of every purchase stays right here in Zanesville,” Mulholland says.
Prices range from $10 to about $55, depending on the variety and the container in which it is stored.
