Weather A Setback for Farmers

The strange weather is becoming a nuisance to farmers.

Paul’s Farm Market on State Route 60 is attracting a large crowd, but the owners are frustrated. The intense heat paired with the lack of rain has created problems.

"Pollination’s bad and the growth on a lot of it, some of the fruit and vegetables are just poor quality compared to what they should be," said Terry Paul, co-owner of Paul’s Farm Market.

The recent rains have helped, but they need more. Once plants are in the ground it is important they get enough water to take root, something that didn’t happen for some of Paul’s sweet potatoes. His sweet corn has taken a hit, they are now harvesting their first patch. The ground was so dry some of the corn didn’t even come up.

"That’s one of the crops that we normally can grow 3 or 4 acres of and do well on. Right now we don’t know where the promise is on it because we’ve got a couple patches out there that look good but the ones we’re harvesting right now looked good and they’re really finishing poor," said Paul.

Despite the setbacks, Paul’s remains open seven days a week and has no lack of produce to sell.
