Zanesville Woman Files Campaign Papers Opposing Holmes in 97th Race

ZANESVILLE, Ohio — Consider Alaina Swope Zanesville’s newest political candidate as of Dec. 18, 2019.

Swope has submitted petitions for her candidacy in the 97th Ohio House District race, opposing Adam Holmes, of Nashport.

WHIZ News asked Swope how she intends to stare down her political opponents in a heavily-Republican district.

“I look to my role models. I look to Sherrod Brown and the campaigns he’s run in Ohio for however many years. He’s been unapologetically progressive and unapologetically aggreesive, he’s won over red counties, red voters. Again, it comes down to what policies are best for the people and how we bring those policies to a level that the people understand,” she said.

Swope, who says she is no relation to former Zanesville Mayor Marilyn Swope, explains the planks of her platform.

“I’m a big proponent of protecting women’s reproductive rights, protecting my own body, so I want to be a progressive voice in the Statehouse for that. We have so many of our voters, our people, living in poverty, I want to pull those people out of poverty,” Swope says.

She is a 2015 grad of Tri-Valley High School.
