The Muskingum County Commissioners have declared a State of Emergency due to the severe snow and ice conditions impacting roads in the area, as well as the ice jams and flood conditions along the Muskingum River.

The commissioners said the decision was made through consultation with the Muskingum County Sheriff, County Engineer and County EMA Director.

This declaration is effective immediately and all public service agencies in the county are requested to respond accordingly.

The Muskingum County EMA said because of the power outages and rising river the county is opening up warming centers. One is at the Dresden United Methodist Church at 1014 Main Street in Dresden, Coburn United Methodist Church on Maple and the Garland Hotel in New Concord.

EMA director Jeff Jadwin said they are currently working with the Red Cross to open an overnight shelter. He said New Concord won’t have power restored for some time.
