Katie Ledecky earns AP female athlete of year for 2nd time

A change of scenery worked out just fine for Katie Ledecky. The American swimming star shifted coasts and coaches after last summer’s Tokyo Olympics. The cross-country move led to another stellar performance at the world championships and a pair of short-course world records. Now, Ledecky has been selected as The Associated Press Female Athlete of the Year for the second time. She first won the award in 2017. This time, Ledecky edged out American track star Sydney McLaughlin by getting the nod based on a first-place votes tiebreaker. Basketball standout A’ja Wilson finished third in the balloting.

It’s no typo: 60-21-10 stat line for Mavs’ Doncic goes viral

DALLAS (AP) — Luka Doncic’s unreal stat line on his latest triple-double has gone viral. The Dallas superstar scored a franchise-record 60 points with a personal-best 21 rebounds and 10 assists. His improbable tying jumper with 1.0 second left in regulation off his intentionally missed free throw set up the first 60-20-10 triple-double in NBA history. Current and former NBA stars along with current and former teammates took to Twitter to marvel at the latest from the three-time All-Star. Doncic topped Dirk Nowitzki’s franchise record of 53 points.

MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. (AP) — Dolphins quarterback Tua Tagovailoa sustained his second concussion of the season in last week’s loss to Green Bay, Miami coach Mike McDaniel confirmed Wednesday. Tagovailoa’s status for the rest of the season isn’t known, and the Dolphins are preparing for Sunday’s pivotal game at New England with Teddy Bridgewater as their starter.

Boxer Gervonta Davis jailed on domestic violence charge

PARKLAND, Fla. (AP) — Authorities say professional boxer Gervonta Davis has been jailed in Florida after he struck a woman in the face. An arrest report obtained by The Associated Press said Davis hit the woman with a “closed hand type slap” at a home in Parkland, Florida, on Tuesday, causing a small abrasion to the inside of her upper lip. The 28-year-old Davis remained in a Broward County jail Wednesday afternoon on a domestic violence charge of battery causing bodily harm. Court records did not specify an attorney for Davis. Davis is scheduled to headline a boxing event Jan 7.

Analysis: Doncic, Jokic set the pace; wild MVP race looming

Luka Doncic had 60 points and 21 rebounds and 10 assists on Tuesday, a stat line never seen before in NBA history. Nikola Jokic had 41 points and 15 rebounds and 15 assists on Sunday, a stat line that was managed on only two other occasions. Two amazing games. Also, they combined for zero dunks. The two best players in the NBA right now do not play with LeBron James’ strength and force, or with Michael Jordan’s acrobatic creativity. Doncic and Jokic do it differently. They dominate by making the game get played at their pace. And right now nobody does it better.

Commanders turn to Wentz to start Week 17 game vs. Browns

ASHBURN, Va. (AP) — The Washington Commanders are turning back to Carson Wentz as starting quarterback for their Week 17 game against the Cleveland Browns. The team announced that Wentz is getting the nod over Taylor Heinicke. Wentz replaced Heinicke during the fourth quarter of Washington’s loss at San Francisco and went 12 of 16 with a touchdown pass. This will be Wentz’s first start since Oct. 13 at Chicago when he broke the ring finger on his right, throwing hand. The Commanders are 7-7-1 and can clinch a playoff spot with a win and with losses by Seattle, Detroit and Green Bay.

Few winning teams leads to 1 Week 17 matchup of winners

This is not exactly a winning weekend upcoming of NFL football. The Monday night matchup between Buffalo and Cincinnati is the only one in Week 17 that features two teams with winning records. That marks just the seventh time since the merger that one of the final two weeks of the season featured one or fewer matchup with winning teams, according to Sportradar. The last time it happened was in Week 16 of the 2011 season when Atlanta faced New Orleans.

Column: Tales from the PGA Tour after fractured year in golf

The year in golf isn’t entirely filled with acrimony caused by the arrival of Saudi-funded LIV Golf. There were plenty of moments beyond the scorecard. AP Golf Writer Doug Ferguson writes his annual “Tales from the Tour.” There’s a curious trend in Japan on a first name of several golfers that sounds a lot like “Tiger.” Cameron Young thought he had winning figured out until another Cameron came along. And if anyone wants to know what the wife and caddie of Steve Stricker is thinking as she’s on the bag, their teenage daughter might have found the answer.

ADELAIDE, Australia (AP) — Novak Djokovic has arrived in Australia almost a year after he was deported over his stance against COVID-19 vaccination. Tennis Australia confirmed that the 35-year-old Serb arrived in Adelaide on Tuesday night. Djokovic will open his 2023 campaign in Adelaide as he prepares for a shot at a 10th Australian Open title. The 21-time major winner has been granted a visa by the Australian government and is listed to play at the Adelaide International which starts Sunday. The Australian Open runs from Jan. 16-29 in Melbourne.

Power vs. speed: Michigan, TCU present unfamiliar challenges

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. (AP) — No. 2 Michigan brings its smash-mouth ways into the College Football Playoff semifinal to face No. 3 TCU on Saturday. It’s tempting to boil down the Fiesta Bowl matchup to Big Ten power vs. Big 12 speed on each side of the ball, especially when the Wolverines’ offense is on the field. Both sides think that’s an oversimplification. While Michigan’s heavy personnel packages and towering offensive line isn’t what TCU is used to facing, the same can be said for the Wolverines going up against a Horned Frogs’ defense that regularly lines up with five defensive backs.
