Pioneer School Project Gains State Support

ZANESVILLE, OH – The Pioneer School in Zanesville, a landmark since 1915, is set for a modern update.

The Ohio Department of Development announced a tax credit  for the former school’s transformation.

The school, located at 952 East Main Street, has seen generations of students and later served as a center for pottery education. The now vacant structure is going to be transformed into 28 market-rate apartments.

“It’s going to be market-rate apartments.” Lydia Mihalik, the Director of ODOD, said. ”You know, housing is definitely something that we’re very concerned about here all across the state of Ohio. So, it’s a win win, it’s exciting to see a building get revitalized with historic properties. Excited to see new apartments to be available to the community here in Zanesville.”

This exciting project totals over $5.4 million dollars and is supported by a $594,000 tax credit.

The renovation will aim to maintain the building’s historical integrity while meeting modern living standards.

“That location, being so close to downtown, makes it perfect for downtown apartments.” Robert Vaile, a Principal on the Pioneer School Project, said. “There’s been very little development of apartments in general, but almost none in the downtown area.”

Vaile said he expects the project to start sometime between January and March. The project is expected to be finished by the end of 2024.
