MSWCD Hosting Events all throughout January

Soil And Water

ZANESVILLE, Ohio–The Muskingum Soil and Water Conservation District is starting the new year off with educational programs.

The first farming after dark event will be held at 7:30 p.m. next Wednesday January 17 via Zoom. However, that’s not the only thing going on. There is also a pizza, pop and profit event the following Friday January 19, which is a hybrid event.

Administrative Assistant Doreen Maurer says these events are intended to inform people on their environment.

“We have a lot of helpful information that will help people maintain or improve their natural resources on their farm in your backyard. Just all around in Zanesville and Muskingum County,” Maurer said. “You can make your backyard into a little oasis for wildlife with birdhouses and bird feeders and pollinator gardens where you can bring in butterflies and beneficial insects to help the soil.”

People interested in attending either event can register on the MSWCD website or by calling their office.

Red oak, sugar maple and many more trees can now be purchased through an order form for spring planting. People must order their trees online or by sending in the order form with money by February 23. Maurer says ordering trees now helps with the cost.

“We help folks buy them in large amounts, seedlings, so they can get them at a cost. They can get what is local for us,” Maurer said. “They’re not invasive, they’re for our location.”

MSWCD is also looking for summer interns. Three interns will work in the office, and one will work with the forester.

All of this information and much more can be found in the organization’s newsletter. People can sign up online or by calling the office to receive the next physical copy.
