A March in March
ZANESVILLE, Ohio – Sometimes words can have more than one meaning. Take for instance March.
Muskingum County Board of Developmental Disabilities Community Relations Coordinator Jenna Conaway explains how one word that defines a specific action while sharing its name with a particular month benefits an overlooked group of residents.
“So we wanted to do a march, it was Missy’s idea to do a march for DD Awareness Month,” Conaway said. “So that’s every March and we just really want to promote inclusion. We want to let the public know that folks with developmental disabilities are just as important as everyone else in the community. And they also want to live, learn, work and play in the community.”
Developmental Disabilities Community Network Coordinator Missy Hartley saw a similar event take place in another county and made the effort to arrange the event here.
“So this is our first one that we’ve ever done, so we’re pretty excited about that,” Hartley said. “And we just want people with developmental disabilities to be part of the community, be included because they are just like the rest of us. There’s some really cool people and I enjoy working with them.”
The Board of DD serves around 90 people who are employed throughout the county and anyone interested in learning more about the various programs the Board of DD offers can visit them online.
